What is the Hero's Journey?

The Hero's Journey is a narrative pattern found in myths and stories, everywhere. It outlines a path of transformation in individuals, consisting of a variety of stages that symbolize a different component of the transformative process. This framework is not only the core of many beloved stories but also is a powerful metaphor for personal development and healing.

  1. The Ordinary World: The hero's regular life before starting an adventure.

  2. The Call to Adventure: The hero is faced with an issue or challenge.

  3. Refusal of the Call: There is hesitation from the hero’s part to accept the challenge because they are unsure or fearful.

  4. Meeting the Mentor: The hero encounters a mentor figure who is essential in providing guidance and encouragement.

  5. Crossing the Threshold: The hero accepts the challenge and commits to the adventure, leaving the familiar world they lived in before.

  6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies: The hero faces challenges, enemies, and makes friends along the way.

  7. Approach to the Inmost Cave: The hero prepares to meet the biggest challenge or enemy from the adventure, for a significant challenge in the adventure. Generally this would be their biggest insecurity or fear.

  8. The Ordeal: The hero faces their major crisis, leading to a personal transformation.

  9. The Reward: The hero achieves victory and could receive an object, insight, or gain a new strength symbolizing their growth and what they have achieved.

  10. The Road Back: The hero begins the journey back to the previously familiar world, where they encounter more challenges but can use their new found abilities, awareness and knowledge to conquer the challenges.

  11. The Resurrection: The hero faces a final test, displaying their transformation, and leading to a great change in perspective, leading to the greatest evolution.

  12. Return with the Elixir: The hero returns with new wisdom and knowledge to their familiar world or home.

Applying the Hero's Journey in Therapy

The Hero's Journey is a framework that can be instrumental in treating a variety of psychological disorders. With the help of a therapist, individuals can be guided to frame their experiences and challenges they face in a different more constructive perspective embodying this hero’s journey narrative allowing individuals to see a clear path to a life lived with more happiness, ease, and purpose.

  1. Depression: For individuals suffering from depression, hopelessness and sadness can make it difficult to see a clear picture of how life can be improved. By learning to apply the Hero’s journey metaphor to their life, individuals can  begin to realize that their current state is not forever and that they can evolve their perspective and life to achieve happiness and purpose.

  1. Anxiety Disorders: For individuals who identify with Anxiety, a change in pespective can be helpful to conquer fears and learn tools to develop more confidence, courage and resilience.

  2. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): By looking at trauma as a catalyst for growth rather than something negatively changing an individual forever; individuals with PTSD can envision the challenges they survived as opportunities to evolve as hero’s of their own journey and life. With the help of a therapist they can learn to integrate those experiences as tangible skills they have acquired and can apply to life.

  3. Addiction: By viewing recovery from addiction as a heroic quest, individuals struggling with addiction can find meaning and purpose in initiating and sticking with recovery.

  4. Identity and Existential Crises: Individuals questioning their purpose can find meaning in restructuring their perspective to include themselves as going through the hero’s journey. This framework helps them explore their identity and find a sense of direction in their lives.

How the Hero's Journey is Used in Therapy

In therapy, the therapist will help individuals to understand the challenges they face at a deeper level as well as identify their current stage they are at in the hero’s journey. Having a clear narrative structure to what the journey to personal growth looks like can be beneficial to individuals. In addition, in therapy you will learn to gain new perspectives on the problems you face reducing feelings of helplessness. You will also learn to recognize who in your journey might be a mentor or ally, helping you recognize and foster an emotional support system with the people in your life. Therapy will help individuals transform the challenges they face into tangible lessons that they will be guided to integrate when facing new challenges in life, making challenges more and more manageable to face the more skills you identify and apply.
